Irgacure TPO is a photoinitiator that is slightly soluble in water but is readily soluble in various organic solvents and typical monomer used for UV curing of unsaturated polyesters and resins containing acrylate groups. It can be used to cure pigmented UV-curable coatings as well as UV-stabilized coatings due to its absorption behavior in the long-wavelength range of the UV spectrum. Irgacure TPO can also be photobleached to produce low yellowing coatings and is therefore widely used, which is especially desirable for white pigment coatings and printing inks such as screen printing. It is used as a key processing aid in the form of a chemical photoinitiator for polymerization in artificial nail systems, primarily for use in UV-curable one-component gel systems. Irgacure TPO is a Norrish Type 1 or alpha cleavage photoinitiator. This means that the Irgacure TPO splits into two free radical fragments which are subsequently incorporated into the polymer as chain ends. As a result, it will be rapidly consumed during the polymerization process, and even in rare cases, a very small amount of residue will be trapped in the rapidly hardened polymer matrix of the formed nail coating. The current and expected use concentrations in the gel range from 0.5% to 5.0%. In principle, two main artificial nail systems are used for nails and toenails. One use is for nail polish (primer, intermediate paint and top coat). Another use is for nail enhancement products. In the SCCS report on Irgacure TPO, SCCS believes that Irgacure TPO is safe when used as a nail model product at concentrations up to 5.0%.
